NET Phase at SCNC

We can't wait to welcome your little netballer to the NET Phase at SCNC!

Our NET program is designed for 5–6 year olds (Pre-Primary and Year 1) and focuses on building confidence, coordination, friendships, and a love of movement in a safe and supportive environment.

This is an introductory program where children learn through play.

There is no pressure, no competition, and no expectation of prior experience. Whether your child has never picked up a ball or already enjoys being active, they are welcome here.

The NET phase is the first step in the Woolworths NetSetGo pathway.

At this stage, the focus is on:

  • Developing basic movement skills
  • Learning fundamental ball skills
  • Building confidence and teamwork
  • Enjoying physical activity

There is no ladder, no finals series, and no competitive emphasis. The goal is to create positive early sporting experiences and encourage a lifelong love of netball.

What is the NET Program?

Each session runs for 45 minutes and includes:

  • Skill-based activities
  • Movement and coordination games
  • Ball handling practice
  • Small group activities
  • Drink breaks

Sessions are designed to be active, engaging, and age-appropriate, with plenty of encouragement and support from coaches and mentors.

What does a session looks like?

Supporting your child at home

You can help build confidence by encouraging simple early habits such as:

  • Learning the names of positions
  • Understanding direction of play
  • Practising catching
  • Keeping feet grounded when catching
  • Stopping immediately when hearing the umpire’s whistle

Parent resources, including position cards and a court diagram, are available on your team home page. Printing these and reviewing them together can be a helpful way to reinforce learning.

From NET through to the GO phase in Year 5, it is essential that all players rotate through positions and learn about each spot on the court.

Of course, everyone wants to be a shooter — who doesn’t love scoring goals? But ,those six other positions are just as important in making those goals happen!

Changing their mindset early that “everyone rotates” will help set them up for future success. We’d love parents to help reinforce that message at home too.
