Become an Umpire

Umpires play a vital role in creating a fair, safe and enjoyable game environment.

Whether you’re new or experienced, umpiring is a great way to stay involved, build confidence and support our netball community.

Why Umpiring Matters

Umpires make netball possible.

They uphold fair play, protect the integrity of the game and help ensure every match is played in the right spirit.

Your role creates a positive experience where players can learn, compete and enjoy the game.

What You'll Do

  • Officiate matches with confidence and fairness
  • Apply netball rules consistently and respectfully
  • Communicate clearly with players, coaches and officials
  • Support a safe and positive game environment
  • Participate in development, mentoring and feedback opportunities
  • Represent the club positively on and off the court

What You Need

You don’t need to be an expert to get started, just a willingness to learn and be part of the game.

  • Interest in learning and applying netball rules
  • Confidence to make decisions on court
  • Willingness to undertake umpire education and training
  • Reliable availability for scheduled games
  • Working With Children Check (WWCC)
  • Commitment to fairness, respect and clear communication

We welcome players, parents and community members to get involved in umpiring at all levels.

With training, mentoring and development pathways available, umpiring is a great way to build confidence, develop leadership skills and stay connected to the game while being part of a supportive club environment.

Training & Commitment

We aim to make umpiring clear and manageable, with a consistent weekly structure and strong support throughout the season.

Umpires are rostered for games each week and are supported through mentoring and development opportunities. With clear communication and guidance, you’ll feel confident stepping onto the court and progressing at your own pace.

Support & Resources

We’re committed to supporting all umpires as they learn and develop.

What we provide:

  • Mentoring and guidance throughout the season
  • Access to umpire development opportunities
  • Clear communication via Heja umpiring group
  • Optional courses through the Netball Learning Portal

Development Pathways

Have-A-Go Program

Our Have-A-Go Umpire Program is the perfect starting point for students in Year 7 and above who are new to umpiring.

Designed to build confidence, skills and knowledge in a supportive environment, this program helps develop future umpires while supporting our youngest players.

What You’ll Do

Umpire NetSetGo games for Year 2–5 players, with games scheduled in the morning at 8:00am, 9:00am and 10:00am. You’ll be paired with an experienced mentor who will guide and support you as you build your confidence and skills, and you’ll receive payment for each game.

Rosters & Availability

Weekly umpiring rosters are shared via the Heja Umpiring Group, with parents or guardians provided a join code before the season begins. You can submit preferences for grades or timeslots, however allocations are based on club requirements and may not always match preferences. If you are unavailable for a rostered game, please notify the club via Heja as early as possible.

Skill Development

Umpires are encouraged to continue building their knowledge and confidence by completing the Foundation Umpires Course and the Rules of Netball Exam, both available through the Netball Learning Portal.

Uniform Requirements

Umpires are required to wear the SCNC Umpire Polo with black shorts of an appropriate length, or the polo worn over a team dress, along with a Thunderer whistle. SCNC umpire polos are available to students at a discounted rate.

Payment

Umpires are paid via bank transfer, with rates set at $10 per game for Have-A-Go umpires, $15 per game for unbadged umpires and $20 per game for C Badge umpires. Bank details are collected as part of the Expression of Interest form.

How to Apply

To get started, submit your Expression of Interest using the contact form below. SCNC will send more information including an expression of interest form. Training, mentoring and development opportunities are provided to support you throughout the season.

Where SCNC train

All teams train at Swan Christian College, where we are fortunate to have access to multiple spaces across the campus for training.

Training days and times are organised by each team’s coach prior to the start of the season. Coaches ensure sessions work well for players and create a positive, supportive environment for everyone to learn and grow.

Where SCNC play

All competition games are played at Dulcie Ludlow Netball Centre in partnership with Swan Districts Netball Association. The courts are located on Gray Drive in Middle Swan.
